It is the base of operations for the Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA), the unit that recruits professional gamers like D.Va to pilot mech suits against robotic Omnic threats. Lore & Background

Watchpoint: Busan is the home base of MEKA, the Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army. During the in-universe Omnic Crisis, an omnic monster rose from the ocean, destroying coastal cities including those in South Korea. The South Korean government developed MEKA, a mobile armored drone unit, to combat the threat, but the omnic adapted to the drone networks, turning them against the Koreans. Struggling to find pilots for new mechs, the government turned to the country's professional gamers, whose reflexes and instincts were thought necessary to operate the mech suits' advanced weaponry. D.Va, a 19-year-old former professional gamer who was the top-ranked player in an unspecified game, was one of the pro gamers drafted. Based in Busan, she began live streaming her combat encounters, developing a global following. Within MEKA, D.Va is supported by Dae-hyun, a mechanic and her childhood friend, and takes orders from Myung, the MEKA's commanding officer.

In Their Own Story

The animated short *Shooting Star*, released in August 2018, shows the origin of D.Va's Self-Destruct ability. In the short, D.Va is forced to use the ability to fend off a wave of attacking Omnics to protect Busan. The short's release coincided with the introduction of a new control map based on Busan. In the comic *New Blood*, released in March 2022, D.Va requests permission from her MEKA captain to contact Overwatch, but communication with Overwatch has been forbidden, and she is told to keep her focus on local Korea-based missions.

Reader's Guide

Watchpoint: Busan serves as the central hub for MEKA operations in South Korea. The facility is staffed by MEKA personnel, including D.Va, a tank character in Overwatch who pilots a highly mobile pink mech suit. D.Va's gameplay involves using twin Fusion Cannons that deal substantial damage at close range, Boosters for quick movement and flight, and a Defense Matrix that absorbs incoming enemy projectiles. Her ultimate ability, Self Destruct, causes her mech suit to explode, dealing massive area of effect damage. If her mech is destroyed, she ejects and can call in a new suit using her Call Mech ability. The map itself is a control map, where teams fight to capture and hold a point. The location is also tied to D.Va's lore, as she defends Busan from Omnic attacks, as shown in the *Shooting Star* animated short.
