Biotic Grasp

Moira O'Deorain's primary weapon, allowing her to drain health from enemies and heal allies.

Moira O'Deorain's primary weapon in *Overwatch* is the "Biotic Grasp," which allows her to store biotic energy by draining health from a nearby enemy in a cone-of-fire in front of her with her right arm, while also healing her. She can switch firing modes to then spend that energy to project a stream from her left hand to heal allies in front of her. Targets obstructed by an enemy shield ability cannot be targeted by either weapon fire. When not attempting to heal allies, biotic energy will also slowly replenish itself over time, but not as fast as if draining health from an enemy.

Lore & Background

Moira's Biotic Grasp is the direct result of her controversial scientific methods, which often took significant risks including experimenting upon herself. The weapon's design reflects her dual nature: according to concept artist Ben Zhang, her hands themselves were meant to represent the fact she was neither good nor bad as a character, with her left hand that would apply healing to allies meant to appear more human, while her right that drained health from enemies appeared corrupted. This duality was also intended to be reflected in her hand poses, with her healing gestures meant to be comforting, while her damaging gestures aggressive and menacing. The colors of the tubes change from yellow to purple depending if she was healing or attacking.

In Their Own Story

In the heat of battle, Moira extends her right hand, and a purple stream of biotic energy reaches out to a nearby enemy. The enemy's health visibly drains as Moira's own biotic reserves fill. With a flick of her left hand, she projects a yellow stream to a wounded ally, the energy knitting their wounds. The process is seamless, a continuous cycle of taking and giving that embodies her philosophy that survival justifies any means. When no enemies are near, her biotic energy slowly replenishes, but the most efficient way to keep her reserves full is to keep draining.

Reader's Guide

To use Biotic Grasp effectively, players must manage Moira's biotic energy meter. The primary fire (right arm) drains health from enemies in a cone-of-fire in front of her, refilling her energy. The alternate fire (left arm) uses that energy to heal allies in a stream. Both attacks are blocked by enemy shields. When not healing, biotic energy slowly replenishes, but draining enemies is much faster. The key is to balance damage and healing, keeping the energy meter from emptying while supporting the team.
